Samsung looks to borrow $1 billion to expand production capacity in Austin, Texas

When you’re producing chips for the iPad and iPhone, you need a serious facility to meet those demands. And evidently, Samsung’s not foreseeing its legal battles with Apple to cause any wrinkles in said plans. In fact, Bloomberg is reporting that Sammy has “sent requests for proposals to banks to borrow as much as $1 billion to expand production capacity at its factory in Austin, Texas,” with the bonds to be issued by Samsung’s US unit. It’s bruited that the company — which has around $19.2 billion in cash — may sell its first overseas bonds since 1997 due to the impossibly low cost of borrowing money these days, and in a time where positive economic news is tough to come by, it’s quite the relief to see a bit of forward progress come from historically low interest rates. Reuters is reporting that the investment will mostly be used to “boost production of mobile chips and next-generation OLED (organic light-emitting diode) display panels,” but specific details beyond that remain murky.

Judge attacks Oracle’s ‘stratospheric’ damages claim against Google, postpones trial

Everything we’ve heard about Judge William Alsup tells us he’s a guy you don’t mess with — and yet Oracle seems bent on doing precisely that. When the company initially demanded $6.1 billion from Google in recompense for alleged violations of its Java patents, Alsup laughed that figure out of court and suggested $100 million might be closer to the mark. Ellison’s crew then came back with a revised claim of $2 billion, which we just knew would lead to another smackdown. Well, here it is: the judge has now cancelled the latest trial date (which had been scheduled for March) and refused to set a new one until the claimant stops using “improper methodologies” for assessing damages, which are “obviously calculated to reach stratospheric numbers.” Perhaps Oracle should try something more tropospheric?

Dell Streak 7 granted new lease on life with extremely experimental ICS port

Streak 7 with ICS

Dell may have cut the Streak 7 off with an eye towards a new mobile future, but the community of unofficial devs aren’t ready to let it ride off into the sunset just yet. DJ_Steve and Giveen have posted a beta build of Ice Cream Sandwich at the TabletRoms forums that uses some elements borrowed from the Cyanogenmod team. If the giant disclaimer at the source link (along with the long list of things that don’t work) doesn’t scare you off, feel free download it and get to flashing. Just remember — you’ve been warned.

Sun Innovations show off Transplay Animated Laser Display, projects blueish vision of the future (video)

As we continued to explore deeper and deeper into the underbelly of CES, something sparkled in the corner of our jaded eyes as we flitted between rows and rows of anonymous stalls. Already festooned with engineering awards, this animated laser display works by beaming a laser generated image onto glass planes containing a film of nanoparticles. Although a blue projector was on show here, it’s also being developed in red, white and even dual blue and red. The projector itself requires only a short distance to project across the full width of the screen — the demo kit you see here was under three feet from the image, which was pin sharp. They’re not really about the implementation here, more the hardware, which accepts VGA input through either the USB connection or the built-in XD card reader. Regardless, the current demo reel includes some retail display animations and rotating logos — including a glimpse of the Zune logo — but the system can also be turned into an augmented reality driving aid. Marvel at it yourself by checking out our eyes-on right after the break.

Inhabitat’s Week in Green: Detroit Auto Show, solar plants and hydrophobic nanocoating

Each week our friends at Inhabitat recap the week’s most interesting green developments and clean tech news for us — it’s the Week in Green.

This week Inhabitat hit the streets of Detroit to bring you the hottest hybrid vehicles and electric cars from the 2012 North American International Auto Show! We saw automakers unveil scores of sexy supercars like the Lexus LF-LC coupe, the Chevy MiRay, and the NSX concept hybrid, and we also showcased more realistic street-ready vehicles like Ford’s Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid, VW’s brand new hybrid Jetta, and Via Motors’ VTRUX extended-range EV pickup. We also peered into the future of sustainable transportation as we brought you the finalists in Michelin’s city car design challenge, we learned that the world’s largest driverless personal transit system is set to break ground in India, and we saw the UK green light the first phase of its new HS2 high-speed rail line.

It was also a bright week for alternative energy as MIT scientists discovered a way to make more efficient solar plants modeled after sunflowers and Sweden announced plans for a massive 700 megawatt wind farm in the Baltic Sea. Meanwhile, we learned that Rwanda’s poo-powered prisons are able to produce 75% of their power from human waste, we showcased plans for an energy-generating rolling suitcase that charges your gadgets, and we saw the launch of several shining solar-powered devices – OLPC’s XO3 tablet computer and the sun-powered Solarkindle e-reader cover.

In other news, this week we rounded up our favorite eco gadgets from CES 2012 – including a hydrophobic nanocoating that makes any gadget completely waterproof. We also saw 200 Chinese works construct a 30 story prefab building in just 15 days, and we watched superman fly across a cute animated LEGO TV. Finally, we brought you the latest and greatest developments in wearable technology – including a set of smart sunglasses that merge virtual information with the real world, a set of bone-conducting earphones, and a set of motorized skates that can be attached to any boring old pair of shoes.

IBM stores bits on arrays of atoms, shrinks magnetic storage to the scientific limit

IBM’s Almaden Research Center is filled with some of the best and brightest minds in the world, and its researchers just released new findings that detail how just how far IBM has come in the realm of magnetic storage. Andreas Heinrich is leading the team at Big Blue that figured out how to create atomic storage based on the fact that atoms of ferromagnetic material align their spins in one direction — so the ability to control the spin direction is what’s needed to make such minature memory possible. Heinrich and his crew were able to accomplish the trick by supercooling 12 atoms to four degrees kelvin (-452 fahrenheit), and arranging them using an electron microscope in such a away that nonvolatile storage became possible. As this is only a proof of concept, we won’t be seeing atomic memory at, say, CES any time soon, but you can dig into the deep science behind the breakthrough at the source link below.

QNX finds a home inside a Porsche 911 (video)

Blackberry’s QNX division wants to expand its footprint and the next major push is inside your car. To that end, a handful of QNX engineers ripped out the stock (and pretty damned good) Porsche head unit on a 911 convertible and stuffed it with a new capacitive screen running the latest build of the OS. As you can see in the video after the jump, it’s an attractive and quick setup, that does everything from VOIP calls to navigation, and since it’s running the same software as the Playbook, it can theoretically run Android apps to boot – even if the reps on hand wouldn’t admit it.

Hands-on with Gracenote’s automotive-grade MoodGrid

Garmin has a new head unit (internally dubbed Everest) that’s due to arrive in a few OEM vehicles later this year, and aside from an attractive interface, a revamped navigation system and one-shot voice commands, a new audio app from Gracenote could be included in the package.

The app is called MoodGrid and it’s a scaled down version of the Android-based version that Gracenote has been testing for the last year. Like the tablet app, the automotive-spec MoodGrid has a graph with Positive, Calm, Energetic and Dark on each axis. Place your finger anywhere between those points and the system scours your iPhone, iPod or Android device for tracks to match your mood. The automotive version uses a five-by-five grid and a new tablet version has the potential to tap into subscription music services to serve up the tunes. Check out the hands-on video after the break and expect to see MoodGrid in dealerships sometime this year.

Turtle Beach XP400 wireless gaming headset hands-on

Turtle Beach announced a duo of new XBOX 360 and PS3 gaming headsets on day one of CES, and we were able to spend a bit of time with one of them, the XP400, on the show floor. It’s Turtle Beach’s flagship gaming headset, featuring adjustable Dolby 5.1 virtual surround sound, a non-AD2P dual-pairing Bluetooth radio for picking up phone calls during gaming sessions, a 15 hour rechargeable battery and dual-band 2.4/5GHZ built-in WiFi.

The actual over-the-ear pieces have a much better layout from previous models, though there are almost as many buttons as there are on the controller you’d be wielding — with volume up / down, chat volume up / down, mute, Bluetooth pairing, limiter button and tone buttons. The included dual-band WiFi adapter that connects to your gaming console of choice is small and pretty minimalistic in design. The adjustable surround angles feature seems useful but we can’t help but to feel it’s a bit gimmicky — we have a hard time figuring out which setting is better. One feature that we really like is the new Limiter function, which allows you to keep the volume relatively high to listen for those footsteps (lower in volume) but won’t blow your ear drums out when a RPG rocket (explosion-like volume levels) hits you in the face. The sound was also crisp and loud as we completed our spec-op mission at the Turtle Beach gaming booth, where the headset’s noise-blocking abilities proved to be particularly handy. Hit up the gallery below for a close look at the $220 gaming headset set to be available this quarter.

Joe Pollicino contributed to this report.

Mercedes-Benz gesture control concept is DICEy

Ze Germans seem to be obsessed with Minority Report-style interior controls, and Mercedes-Benz has taken it to the next level with a full-scale interior with nary a button or switch to be found.

Mercedes’ Dynamic & Intuitive Control Experience (DICE) utilizes a series of proximity sensors to detect arm and hand movements, which control everything from music, navigation and social functionality to a heads-up display that comprises the entire windshield.

You can get a feel for the system in action in the video after the break, but as you’ll see, it’s very beta, mistaking hand movements for selections and generally being a pain to use – let alone control while you’re driving a car. Thankfully, Mercedes has plenty of time to work out the kinks as it won’t be coming to production for at least a couple decades.

iConnectivity outs iConnectMUSE digital audio mixer for iOSers (video)

Some hot music tech for iDevices already dropped at CES, but the product announcement concerto plays on. The next act? The iConnectMUSE digital audio mixer from iConnectivity, featuring six stereo in / outs, headphone out, two USB ports, a “hub-able” USB host, Ethernet / network sharing and MIDI pass-thru. Maker iConnectivity claims studio-grade analog-to-digital conversion will make it a snap to record professional sounding mixes on tour, back at the hotel or even at home. Your garage band can get mixing from Q2 and iConnectivity is asking $230 for the privilege. Hit the PR and curiously silent video over the jump for more details.

Matias Tactile One, SlimOne hands-on (video)

We already covered the announcement of the new Matias tactile-keyboards but couldn’t resist descending into the show floor in order to get a quick hands-on with the Canadian-made kit. The USB-powered boards contain a Bluetooth module and a physical button (with a blue LED) that you can switch between typing on your desktop and wirelessly to your device. The “Island-Style” SlimOne replicates the look and feel of the current Apple island-keyboard, but with scissor keys, which pleasantly resist your fingers. The ’90s style Tactile One forces your hands to readjust back two-decades, but the mechanical board was a joy to use, with no lag between typing and it appearing on a compatible phone. After the break we’ve got a short video where we learn that retro keyboards can send people into such a frenzy that they forget to type the word “movie” correctly.

Samsung to merge Bada with Tizen: the OS party just got a little freaky

While everyone was watching Windows Phone parting the iOS / Android curtains, no one noticed Bada and Tizen making cheeky eyes at each other. It was rumored Samsung might open-source its featurephone OS, but according to Forbes, it’ll now fuse it with the Intel-backed Tizen project. Once the nuptials are complete, it’s reported Bada apps will play nice with Tizen — including full backwards compatibility — with developers getting a new integrated SDK and API. We’re guessing then, that it’s the Bada brand getting the chop when the two linux-based systems tie the knot. The spirit of MeeGo, of course, also lives on in Tizen making this one big concept cocktail. One we should see being poured into “at least one or two” Samsung handsets, and eventually other products, sometime this year — failing any last-minute cold feet.

A Red Scarlet-X 4K tour around CES 2012 (video)

For the third CES in a row, our old friend Ted Schilowitz has stopped by to let us drool over Red’s latest high-end cameras. And boy, this is one helluva camera we have this time. You may recall that last year we were shown a working Scarlet prototype with 3K video resolution and a fixed lens; but fast forward to 2012 and we have the Scarlet-X, a sturdy 4K beast that not only supports interchangeable lens, but it’s also actually out on the market. Obviously, the $9,700 base price (excluding the Canon EF lens mount; Nikon and Leica mounts coming soon) is aimed at film studios instead of us regular Joes, but Ted was kind enough to spend a whole afternoon showing us all the goodness on the Scarlet-X — we even got to play with it on the CES show floor, and unsurprisingly, this Red kit became quite the celebrity. Read on to find out how we got on with it.

Toshiba Portege M930 prototype hands-on (video)

And the hybrid devices keep on coming. Sitting high on a shelf in Microsoft’s booth, hidden among the earthly clamshell laptops, is the Toshiba Portege M930, a prototype whose 13-inch screen slides down to completely cover the keyboard. All told, it’s awfully reminiscent of the ASUS Eee Pad Slider — complete with a propped-up display and squat keyboard. The keyboard is so narrow, in fact, that Toshiba had to forgo a traditional trackpad and instead put a touch sensor and buttons over on the right edge. Though it’s a bit heavy for an Ultrabook, at 4.2 pounds, it has some Ultrabook-grade innards, including a Core i5 processor, 4GB of RAM, Intel HD 3000 graphics and a 256GB solid-state drive. Take a tour around the device and you’ll also find the usual array of ports: dual USB 2.0 sockets, HDMI, an Ethernet jack, an SD reader and separate headphone and mic ports.

Even when we previewed the Slider we weren’t keen on sacrificing that much deck space in the name of bold industrial design and here, too, the keys feel unnecessarily crowded. The good news is that the hinge mechanism feels smooth and controlled — not too tight, but rigid enough to inspire confidence in its build quality. That 13.3-inch screen also looks bright enough, though we imagine that 1280 x 800 resolution will be a turn-off for more than a few of you. Unfortunately, the M930 is so early its development that the touchscreen wasn’t even working, though it responds just fine to the pen, which stows in the back of the laptop. No word on pricing or availability (Toshiba isn’t even showing it at its booth), but even if this thing never materializes we’ve got some hands-on photos and video below.

Hanvon C-18 Mirasol e-reader hands-on (video)

Qualcomm unveiled its new C-18 Mirasol e-reader yesterday, and today, we managed to get our hands on it here at CES. Manufactured by Hanvon, this device is officially labeled as an e-reader, though to be honest, it felt more like a tablet to us. Unlike the lightweight Kindle, the C-18 felt a tad heavy in our hands, with backlighting more typical of a slate than reader. It also runs its own Android skin, which raises some interesting questions of how many Android apps it would support. The color Mirasol display certainly piqued our interests, though we’ll have to wait a little bit longer before we get a closer look at it, as the C-18 won’t hit the Chinese market until February, with no set date for a US launch yet (price remains equally opaque). For more details, check out our gallery below, along with the hands-on video, after the break.

Ainovo $79 Novo7 Paladin Ice Cream Sandwich tablet hands-on

Nope, that’s not a typo — we just got our hands on a $79 Ice Cream Sandwich tablet. The folks from MIPS popped by the Engadget stage to talk about the budget device. The Ainovo Nova7 Paladin is available now in China, so if you actually want to get your hands on the thing here in the US, it will likely cost you a bit more when you actually factor in, you know, air fare and such, but the company assures us that something along the same lines ought to be coming to the States in the near future, with a similar price point.

As expected, this isn’t the sexiest tablet we’ve seen on the show floor — you’re not getting a Galaxy Tab here — but the build quality is quite solid. The seven-inch screen is 800 x 480 — again, not high-end specs we’re dealing with, but it does the trick for casual gaming and YouTube videos, and the MIPS folks mention to us plans to bump up the res for a US release. Along the top of the device, you’ll find three buttons: power, back and menu — the placement on the latter two are a bit counterintuitive when first picking up the tablet, but you’ll get used to it pretty quickly. Along the right side, you’ll find a headphone jack, miniUSB port (yes, mini), volume buttons and a microSD slot for expanding the already decent 8GB of storage.

Inside you’ll find that MIPS-based 1GHz single core processor and 512MB of RAM — again, not the greatest, but it should get the job done for most the paces you’d expect to put a $79 tablet through. There’s no cameras or GPS on the thing, though we didn’t really miss either one. If you’re looking for something that can do video and stills, however, $20 more will get you the $99 Novo7 basic.

Myriam Joire contributed to this report.

MSI GT783 hands-on

A sub-three-pound laptop? Been there, done that — at least if you’re MSI. Three years after bringing netbooks and other cute things to CES, the company is focusing on more robust machines — so much so that while other OEMs are launching me-too Ultrabooks, it’s trotting out a gaming box instead. The latest addition to the family is the GT783, a 17-inch beast of a portable rig we saw while making the rounds at CES. Chief among the specs is NVIDIA’s top-shelf GTX 580M GPU with 2GB of video memory, though your $2,300 will also buy you a quad-core Core i7 CPU, 16GB of RAM (upgradeable to 32GB) and a matte, 1080p display. Rounding out the list are dual drives: a 128GB SSD and 750GB 7,200RPM HDD. During our demo, we took a brief detour into Battlefield 3, and though we didn’t have Fraps at the ready to monitor frame rates, we can tell you it ran smoothly, even at max settings. The programmable backlighting is alright too, though we’re not convinced 35 colors will do it for you like a yellow chassis.

ViewSonic ViewPad 10e hands-on (video)

You’ve already seen the ViewPad 10pi and the prototype E70, but we have one more tablet from ViewSonic for your thirsty peepers. Known as the ViewPad 10e, it’ll go on sale at the end of the month for $299 and is squarely aimed at the budget crowd. Build-wise, you’d never know it, as the slab contains a downright sexy 10-inch IPS display with excellent viewing angles and a svelte 9.1mm profile. Unfortunately, this is where the good news ends. Rather than shipping with Honeycomb or Ice Cream Sandwich, the ViewPad 10e runs Gingerbread with some fanciful software enhancements. Further, because it lacks certification from Google, the Android Market is nowhere in sight, leaving users to fend for scraps in the Amazon Appstore. Using the tablet was generally a choppy endeavor — visible even from the application menu — and the experience became decidedly worse when we took the slate online. Perhaps most unfortunate, this effort suggests that ViewSonic could make an excellent tablet if it wished to do so. Instead, the ViewPad 10e feels like a half-hearted attempt.

A closer look at Origin PC’s Phase Change cooling system (and its new gaming laptops too)

Believe it or not, we just spent 45 minutes with two of Origin PC’s founders and weren’t treated to a gaming demo. Then again, the company isn’t here at CES to brag about 3DMark11 scores. Instead, it’s showing off its new freon-based Phase Change cooling technology, which enables the Genesis desktop to be overclocked to 5.7GHz, and which pushes that desktop’s starting price from $1,337 to $4,499. So how does that $3,000 feature work? As it turns out, not unlike an air conditioner. The setup relies on a compressor to compress gas, which liquifies first and then evaporates, absorbing heat along the way. The Little Devil chassis used for the purpose of this demo has an LED screen displaying the -40-degree operating temperature, but you won’t need it: the system automatically shuts down if it gets too cold, and it won’t boot into Windows until Phase Change is up and running. In addition to all this, the Genesis uses liquid cooling around the motherboard, and an air-based system on the video cards.

While we were there, we also checked out the EON15-S and EON17-S laptops, which will be available with an updated design sometime this quarter. Though the interior should look familiar to anyone who’s ever laid eyes on a Clevo, Origin remodeled the lid, adding a matte finish option and race car-inspired molding (to evoke the idea of speed, natch). As for specs, Origin’s founders directed us to the company’s website, which suggests the internals won’t change along with the design (certainly, the prices remain the same). Expect these to start at $1,539 for the 15-incher and $1,590 for the larger model — prices that now include 24/7 free lifetime support. Find some photos below and continue on past the break for a video where you can see (and hear) that Phase Change setup in action.

Powerskin’s SolarCharge still believes in the sun

Remember when Nokia poo-poohed the idea of solar charging as a viable way to keep a smartphone juiced? It seems that no-one told XPal Power, since its PowerSkin brand has just launched a new photovoltaic kit as part of its 2012 lineup here at CES:
  • SolarCharge is a silicone-wrapped brick with a solar panel on one end that’ll charge most devices via a microUSB port. The 1000mAh battery tucked inside is rated to pony up around 350 minutes of talk time for your average smartphone. It’ll set you back $70 when it arrives in February.
  • KeyCharge attaches to your keychain and can offer a quick boost 90 minutes of additional time on its 750mAh battery, again via its microUSB port. It’ll cost a more modest $25 and will be available to order at the same time
Come with us, and you’ll be, in a world of pure press releases, after the break.

Karotz connects to Facebook and Twitter, waits for Godot (video)

Nabaztag has died many a death, but that quirky rabbit’s legacy still lives on in lil’ bro Karotz. The desktop-friendly bunny, which just launched in the US today, is what parent company Violet is calling the “first Facebook hardware.” It’s a strong claim to make, but that superfluous moniker is actually better applied to the device’s social networking integration. When connected to the internet, the unit’s voice recognition software (processed by external servers) can execute commands to snap photos — taken via built-in webcam — and upload them to Facebook. You can even have it read your Twitter feed, in addition to the weather. The company’s also released an app, available for Android and iOS, that gives users the ability to send typed messages through the unit — resulting in a talking Karotz — or simply manipulate its ears. It’s a fun exercise in uselessness — at least, that’s how one rep on the showroom floor put it. Can’t decide if you’ve got $129 to burn? Then check out our video below while you ponder the merits of this pointless tech.

ESI 250 deskphone wants to make business smartphones easy (hands-on)

Over at Showstoppers, ESI offered up an Android-based desktop phones hoping to bring the world of Google’s OS kicking and screaming onto a business desk near you. The ESI 250 runs on Android Froyo (2.2), with a color display capable of running a limited bunch of (ESI-vetted) third-party Android apps like Evernote, text messaging and visible voicemail and reminders. Looks-wise, aside from the touchscreen, it’s business as usual. The Android interface is a little sluggish, although our major issue is that we want to be handling Gingerbread by now, if not Ice Cream Sandwich. The enterprise phone is pegged for a Q2 launch, with prices pegged at a suitably business-like price of $300 per unit.

Edgar Alvarez contributed to this report.

Amazon, Rovi, Flixster and Samsung highlight UltraViolet’s CES press event

The launch of UltraViolet earlier this year was very much the same as we’ve come to expect from Hollywood. In the case of DVD and Blu-ray, they eventually manage to get it right. Time will tell if UltraViolet ends up successful or another DRM story like PlaysForSure, but studio execs like Ron Sanders of Warner Brothers said “a year ago this was just a concept… we have a bright future” while participating in a panel at the UltraViolet press event at CES today. There are plenty of reasons he might feel that way, but announcements from Panasonic and Samsung to add Flixster app to its HDTVs and Blu-ray players is surely one of them — Flixster is owned by Warner and evidently one of the most downloaded apps of all time from the iTunes store. In addition to the success of Flixster, the DECE claims to already have 750k UltraViolet households signed up in less than three months. The current state of UltraViolet and much more after the break.

Dell’s XPS 13 Ultrabook: IT-friendly, 128GB SSD and backlit keyboard standard, arrives in February for $999

You didn’t think Dell was going to sit out the Ultrabook fad, did you? We’ll never know exactly what the hold-up was, but whatever the company’s excuse it finally has something to compete with the likes of the MacBook Air and ASUS Zenbook UX31. The company just announced the XPS 13, which weighs in at a shade less than three pounds (2.99, to be exact) and has a wedge profile that tapers from .71 inches to .24 (18 to 6mm). With a starting price of $1,000, it sports an aluminum lid and carbon fiber chassis — a material we wish more Ultrabook makers would incorporate. Though it has a 13-inch screen, it’s the kind of panel with bezels so narrow that Dell was able to build a chassis small enough for a 12-inch system. Put bluntly, expect this to be one of the most compact Ultrabooks around (though not the lightest).

What’s that? You want technical details too? At the entry level, it’ll come with a Core i3 i5 processor, 128GB SSD, 4GB of RAM and backlit keyboard, though you’ll also be able to upgrade to a 256SSD and either a Core i5 or i7 CPU (Sandy Bridge at launch, with Ivy Bridge to follow in a refresh later this year). Other specs include a 300-nit, 1366 x 768, Gorilla Glass display; Intel HD 3000 graphics; a 47Wh battery rated for up to eight hours; Bluetooth 3.0; and Intel’s Smart Connect and Rapid Start technologies. As HP is doing with the Folio 13, Dell plans to sell this in both its consumer and business channels; accordingly, the machine will be offered with TPM, asset tagging, corporate images and custom BIOS to keep the IT guys happy. It’ll be available at the end of February, but if you need to know as much as you can now, we’ve got hands-on photos below, along with impressions after the break.

TuneIn Radio comes to Ford SYNC AppLink, brings 50,000 radio stations with it

Unhappy with the radio selection in your auto? If you’re rocking a Ford equipped with SYNC AppLink and a smartphone, that selection is about to get a whopping 50,000 bigger thanks to TuneIn Radio. An updated version of that app enables support for Dearborn’s auto interconnect which’ll allow drivers to tune into AM, FM, HD and Internet radio stations. And naturally like everything else SYNC, it’ll be just as happy taking commands over voice. The updated app should hit the App Store soon, but we’d imagine an update to the Android version isn’t far out.

Polaroid announces Android-powered SC1630 Smart Camera, slated for release this year

Here’s something we weren’t expecting to see at CES today: Polaroid has just announced a new camera… powered by Android. The company’s new, 16-megapixel SC1630 Smart Camera features a 3x optical zoom lens, 3.2-inch touch-based display, 36-108mm lens and WiFi capabilities, but the real story here is the Android UI integration. With this five-ounce portable, users can take shots in 18 different scene modes and instantly upload their images to social networking sites. Plus, since it’s linked to the Android Market, they’ll even be able to sync it up with any of the myriad photo apps already available to smartphone and tablet users, while finding comfort in that oh-so familiar Android UI. Pricing is still a mystery and Polaroid hasn’t offered a release date more specific than “2012,” but we’ll hopefully find out more when we get our hands on it here in Las Vegas. Full PR after the break.

Gaikai’s servers will be backing in the new Smart TV cloud gaming service, which will permeate LG Cinema 3D TVs launched in 2012. Toshiba announces Camileo Air10, its first WiFi camcorder, and the Z100 3D

Ever since the Flip went bye-bye all has been mostly quiet on the pocket camcorder front, but today we seem to be hitting the jackpot when it comes to new budget cams. First, Sony unveiled the Bloggie Live (which, er live-streams), and now Toshiba is showing off the Air its first wireless camcorder, the Camileo Air10. Like the Bloggie Live, it’s equipped for easy uploads and live-streaming, though in this case the list of supported services includes UStream, YouTube, Facebook, Picasa and Twitvid. For the money, it also snaps 16MP stills and does 1080p video, as does every other camcorder in Toshiba’s stable. Moving along, Toshiba also announced the Z100 3D, a 3D camcorder with a glasses-free 3D touchscreen LCD (it’s a wee one, at 2.8 inches, so we’re not sure how much you’ll be able to appreciate the 3D effects before outputting it to a TV). This, too, takes 16 megapixel photos. Look for the Air10 to hit for $150 next month, with the Z100 3D arriving in late March for $220.

Gametel Bluetooth Controller Now Works on iOS

Formerly available on Android devices, the Gametel Bluetooth controller was recently shown at CES working compatibly on iOS devices. This gadget from Fructel attaches itself to a smartphone using a plastic spring-loaded clamp and rubberized grip, which holds the phone securely (no matter what the model) even when shaken. Battery life is expected to run up to nine hours, or shorter if your smartphone could not keep up with it.

The controller makes a great alternative to touch screen buttons, which can be a hassle in games that require precision such as fighting games. Too bad it does not have an analog controller.

This Bluetooth game controller has been available in Europe for 58 euros (about US$74) and will be brought in North America by first quarter of 2012.

Canon’s VIXIA camcorders go social for the new year, get improved low-light performance

Canon VIXIA camcorder

It’s the most wonderful horrible gadgety time of the year — it’s CES time. And that means dozens, nay, hundreds of companies issuing annual refreshes of their product lines. Canon is amongst the legions launching upgrades and its VIXIA line of digital camcorders are not getting left behind. The company’s M and R lines are both getting refreshes for 2012 that include boatloads of enhanced connectivity — including the ability to share over WiFi and DLNA. They can even connect to an iPad or iPhone and directly post clips to YouTube and Facebook using the Movie Uploader app. Under the hood is an all new CMOS sensor that has improved low-light performance and the HF M-series has selectable scenes not just for video, but audio as well, ensuring you get the best sound on your clips. The VIXIA HF M52, VIXIA HF M50 and VIXIA HF M500 camcorders are scheduled to hit shelves in March for $750, $650 and $550, respectively. The budget minded VIXIA HF R32, VIXIA HF R30 and VIXIA HF R300 will arrive at the same time priced at $550, $450 and $350. Check out the gallery below and the PR after the break for a few more details.

3M Touch Systems 46-inch Projected Capacitive Display hands-on (video)

Heard of Microsoft Surface? Sure you have. It’s the tech that takes capacitive touch and smears it across a table-like design. While those devices, manufactured by the likes of Samsung, have begun their slow creep into the market, rival companies are hard at work on their own multi-user, widescreen touch solutions. Which is precisely what 3M Touch Systems is showing off today at CES Unveiled. At 46-inches, its prototype Projected Capacitive Technology ups the ante on user input, allowing a theoretical maximum of 60 touch points and up to four split screens. We had a chance to take the table for a test run, so click on past the break to see how it fared.

Logitech Cube Mouse

People may have a clear idea of what a PC mouse looks like. After all, it has not changed in terms of design after all these years. But it may be time also for some people to explore other options that might work just as good, even better. That is what the new Logitech Cube offers.

The Logitech Cube is a device that may not look like a conventional mouse. But it provides a similar function that may even be more convenient to use. The Logitech Cube is small enough to fit into the palm of your hand. Users can use it to navigate across the PC screen by simply swiping a finger on the surface of the main panel. But that is not all that it can do.

When a user lifts the Logitech Cube up in the air, it automatically changes to its Presenter mode. users can then click on the Cube to advance a presentation slide. Turning the Cube over and clicking will let the user go back to the previous slide. it comes with a Logitech Unifying wireless receiver that can accommodate up to 6 Unifying compatible devices without having to use another USB port. The Logitech Cube mouse device is currently available for pre-orders at Logitech for US$70.

Sony quits OLED TV in the consumer market, we quietly shelve hopes for the XEL-2

Hope you’re in the mood to pour one out, because the Daily Yomiuri Online has just confirmed that Sony is giving up the OLED TV in its consumer business. According to the report, it has discontinued production of OLED TV sets for the mainstream market, and while it’ll continue selling ‘em to its corporate clients, it’ll concentrate the home-use TV portion on LCD models. For historians in attendance, they’ll no doubt (fondly) recall the XEL-1 — a devilishly thin personal OLED TV that never stood a chance at filling anything other than a luxury niche. The same sect will also remember that it discontinued OLED TV sales domestically back in 2010, but exports to America and Europe continued up until now. The real question? Whether or not those rollable OLEDs are still getting researched in a Sony lab; the futurist in us can only pray so.

Polaroid launching new tablet, color screen e-reader at CES?

What’s this here, then? A sneaky tipster sent of some shots of what looks to be a new Android tab and a color screen e-reader from the photo-shaking folks at Polaroid. Not a lot to go on here, but, fittingly, the company is pushing the photo-taking capabilities of the slate, pitching it as a “tablet + camera,” with what appears to be both front and rear cameras / flashes, the latter of which are prominently displayed on the rear of the device. The speaker also seems to get prominent placement, just above the screen. For the record, we whole-heartedly approve of the app selection on the device. On the reader front, we’ve got what certainly appears to be a color screen device, apparently suitable for reading the latest George R. R. Martin novels.
